FAQ

Quick answers to common questions.

What is the difference between short-term and long-term capital gains?

Short-term capital gains apply to assets held for 1 year or less and are typically taxed at your ordinary income rate. Long-term capital gains apply to assets held for more than 1 year and are usually taxed at a lower rate (0%, 15%, or 20% in the US).

How do I calculate capital gains?

Capital Gain = Sale Price − Purchase Price − Selling Costs. The tax is then applied to this gain amount based on your holding period and applicable tax rate.

Are there any capital gains exemptions?

Many countries offer exemptions. In the US, you can exclude up to $250,000 ($500,000 married) on primary residence gains. The UK has an annual tax-free allowance. Many countries have lower rates for long-term holdings.

Do I have to pay capital gains tax on cryptocurrency?

In most countries, yes. Cryptocurrency is treated as property, and selling or exchanging crypto for a profit triggers a capital gains tax event.
