Employees working in Korean companies are required to enroll in National Health Insurance. 50% of the premium is paid by the employee and 50% by the employer, calculated by multiplying monthly salary by the insurance rate.

The 2026 health insurance rate is 7.09%. Employee and employer each pay 3.545%.

How is long-term care insurance calculated?

Long-term care insurance is 12.95% of the health insurance premium (2026). For example, if health insurance is ₩100,000, long-term care is ₩12,950.

Is National Health Insurance mandatory for foreigners?

Yes, as of July 2019, all foreigners staying in Korea for more than 6 months are mandatorily enrolled in National Health Insurance (NHI).

Can I opt out of Korean health insurance?

Only if you have equivalent overseas health insurance that covers treatment in Korea. Most E-visa holders and residents must enroll.
