Pet Calorie Calculation Guide

Pet Calorie Calculator scientifically computes your dog or cat's Daily Energy Requirement (DER) based on body weight, life stage, and activity level. Get personalized calorie and food amount recommendations.

Activity & Life Stage Factors

  • • Neutered adult dog: × 1.6 / cat: × 1.2
  • • Growing puppy/kitten: × 3.0 / × 2.5
  • • Sedentary / overweight prone: × 0.8-1.0
  • • Active working dog: × 3.0-5.0

DER Formula

RER = 70 × weight(kg)0.75

DER = RER × Activity Factor × Body Condition Factor

FAQ

Quick answers to common questions.

How is daily calorie requirement for dogs calculated?

The veterinary formula uses RER (Resting Energy Requirement) = 70 × weight(kg)^0.75, multiplied by activity and body condition factors. This calculator automatically computes RER and DER (Daily Energy Requirement) for you.

Why do cats have different calorie needs than dogs?

Cats have lower activity levels and unique CarniTRE nutritional requirements compared to dogs. A neutered adult cat typically needs RER × 1.2, while a neutered adult dog needs RER × 1.6. The calculator automatically applies the correct factors per species.

Do I need to input food calorie density (kcal/kg)?

Optional but recommended. Entering the kcal/kg from your pet food label enables the calculator to also show daily food amount in grams. Most dry foods range from 300-400 kcal/kg.

What happens if I overfeed my pet?

Chronic calorie excess is the primary cause of pet obesity, which increases risks of diabetes, joint disease, and cardiovascular problems. Use a proper measuring cup and keep treats within 10% of total daily calories.

Do puppies and kittens need different calorie management?

Yes! Growing pets need 2-3× more calories than adults for proper development. Select 'Growth Stage' in the activity level to apply growth factors (3.0× for puppies, 2.5× for kittens).

Can switching food change my pet's calorie intake?

Yes. Different foods have different kcal/kg values. Low-calorie diets are 250-300 kcal/kg while regular diets are 300-400 kcal/kg. Always re-enter kcal/kg when switching food brands to maintain accurate feeding amounts.
